Veterans to Agribusiness: New Mission. Shared Purpose. Feed America.

Program Overview:
According to the USDA, the average age of U.S. farmers has risen to 57.5 years, with older producers retiring and creating an urgent need for the next generation to sustain American agriculture. Family farms, which make up 96% of all U.S. farms, are at the heart of this industry, producing over $318 billion in agricultural products annually. At Archi’s Institute for Sustainable Agriculture, we offer flexible online, in-person, and hybrid training programs to equip veterans with the skills needed to build thriving careers in agribusiness. If you’re looking for a mission-driven career that combines purpose, opportunity, and the rewarding lifestyle of family farming, becoming a farmer could be the perfect next step for you!

At Archi’s Institute, we believe that a strong network is essential for success in agriculture. Our program provides veterans with opportunities to connect with instructors, guest speakers, classmates, and local agricultural organizations to build a robust support system. This approach aligns with the mission of the Farmer Veteran Coalition, which states, “We cultivate a new generation of farmers and food leaders and develop viable employment and meaningful careers through the collaboration of the farming and military communities.” By fostering these connections, veterans can gain valuable mentorship, shared experiences, and collaborative opportunities that contribute to their long-term success in agribusiness while strengthening the bond between agriculture and the veteran community.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are there any prerequisites for the program? How can I prepare?
A: There are no prerequisites for the Organic Agribusiness program. All necessary information and resources will be provided on the first day of class. You can begin preparing by exploring resources on organic agriculture and agribusiness in general.
Q: What’s the difference between the 6-week and 12-week Organic Agribusiness programs?
A: Our 6-week intensive program is designed for veterans who can dedicate their time fully to the course. The 12-week program offers the same curriculum but is structured for veterans who are working or have other commitments, allowing them to study part-time. Both programs cover the same material and award the same college credits.
Q: Is the Organic Agribusiness program entirely online?
A: Yes, the core curriculum is delivered 100% online. Classes are conducted via Zoom, and course materials are accessible through the Canvas learning platform. The optional farm labs are the only in-person component.
Q: How many instructional hours are included in the program?
A: Both the 6-week and 12-week programs include approximately 240 hours of instruction. This translates to 16 semester credits, equivalent to a three-unit college course taken every seven days during the 6-week program. The workload is distributed over a longer period in the 12-week program.
Q: Can I get hands-on farm training?
A: Yes! We offer optional hands-on farm labs. During the 6-week program, these labs are available up to two days per week. In the 12-week program, labs are offered one day per week. While the labs are not required for graduation, we strongly encourage participation for the valuable practical experience. If you can’t attend during the program, you’re welcome to complete the labs after graduation.
Q: What is the refund policy if I need to withdraw from the program?
A: If you withdraw before the first day of class, you will receive a full tuition refund. If you withdraw after the first day of class, no tuition refunds will be issued. A $150 registration fee, charged by the University of Minnesota Crookston (UMN), applies to any withdrawal made less than two weeks before the start of class. This fee covers transcript maintenance and record-keeping, regardless of attendance. Students are responsible for the full cost of tuition. Archi’s Institute and UMN are not responsible for covering tuition costs.
